Streaming for movies and music has changed the market. However, streaming as it is currently structured is predicated on an economic and financial structure that isn't sustainable in the long term.
The SAG-AFTRA strike is focused on the same challenge faced by musicians - streaming doesn't pay well (major understatement).
In movies and TV shows, at least actors get paid up front. How much is up front, and how much are they told they will get from residuals.
In music, very frequently the musician(s) do not get paid up front to create their music. They get compensated from music sales and streaming payouts.
How many people do you know who buy music anymore (CD, DVD, SACD, Vinyl, etc.)?
The streaming payouts for musicians are ridiculous! Streaming payouts are so small as to be almost non-existent.
While actors and screenwriters may have a valid point with their strike. For musicians and songwriters struggle is very real, and far worse.
What will that future long term sustainable market for music and movies look like? How will it be structured such that creative artists (musicians, songwriters, actors, screenwriters, etc.) get paid well, businesses and employees that support the artists do well financially, with an infrastructure and price point that works well for consumers?
